The Great Wall of Bhutanomics

Tshering Tobgay, Jurmi Talisman Chhowing, Tenzin Lamsang

At the outset, please be informed that I am not a member of any political parties. I am truly apolitical and non-partisan. Our Constitution grants the freedom of expression and I believe that the freedom of expression in a democracy must not be aimed at defamation. Rather it should be based on authentic evidences and other prerequisite justifications.

Further, freedom of expression should not be clumsy and for this freedom, the expresser must be responsible and disciplined by taking meticulous precautions. Till date, the Bhutanomics website has published huge information mostly about the elite and incumbent people – some are true, some are biased, comments are ridiculous, and some are dangerous for our fledgling democracy. Some of the incumbent politicians who served the nation for many years are put behind bars, some in maroon robes and with best bib and tucker, some just bored the pants off the elite people, and comments on each article are always at sixes and sevens. While such website is a must for democracy and a corruption free society, it can also hamper and belittle our reputation as a GNH nation. The readers must be cackled and chuckled because the freelance writers cum anonymous contributors has written much in hilarious way – I mean hidden truth in gags style.

In a democratic form of government, the politicians and top bureaucratic people are legitimate target for satire. In the middle-east, the top most people are caught for corruption scandals, sexual misconduct and other official misbehaves. No matter how powerful and rich they are, the law of land supersedes them by putting them behind bars. This means, for democracy, every ruler must have a clean mind and the fundamental rights must not be ignored. But is this possible? Can ACC make Bhutan a corruption free society? While I truly acknowledge the tremendous achievements made by ACC in reducing corruption. In addition, there are certain facts brought about by Bhutanomics which needs strict ACC attentions. But If ACC dig out the every issue raised by Bhutanomics, then majority of Bhutanese will go behind bars. I believe that we are a small nation with a countable population, and directly or indirectly we are related to each other. That is why even if someone writes gawky article on Bhutanomics, the writer can be easily found out. But how many of us know who the freelance writers of Bhutanomics are?

1. Tenzin Lamsang became popular after he dug out the Gyelposhing land scam in detail. He was called as Tenzin Badpath or Tenzin Landscam by many of my friends because he enjoys disrespecting the DPT people and enjoys truly in favouring PDP -People’s Disharmony Party. Earlier he worked in NDTV (New Delhi Television) and he is good in prodding news source, expert in advising Editor Sonam Pelvar to write something bad about DPT and misinform the public. He truly hates DPT. His writing skills is not even 0.02% of Dr. Sonam Kinga and if you don’t believe this, ask Lyonpo Nandal Rai. Even Nandal Rai can detect the mistakes made by ‘The Bhutanese’ newspaper.

2. The second freelance writer is JTC – Jurmi Talisman Chowing who wrote many letters on behalf of Pemagatselpa to JYT on Bhutanomics. He keeps updating and writes dirty things about JYT on facebook without proper evidences. He tweets in the name of JYT and misinforms globally. He earlier worked as editor of ‘The Journalist’ newspaper and later in Drukpa Magazine. Married to a foreigner, he hardly appreciates the developments brought about by DPT. He admired one thing about DPT, i.e. his status about JYT in facebook. His knowledge is not even 1/5th of JYT, Dasho Karma Ura and Dr. Sonam Kinga. Enough can be defined as ‘enough’ only. We understood your intentions and we don’t need criticisms only. We sometime obliged to read positive comments.

3. If a freelance writer posts article about PDP, then the group of freelance writers will directly ignore. These writers are politically influenced and biased.

Enough is enough!

  4. (State of the Nation Report) The Prime Minister, Jigmi Y Thinley, said the growth rate of the country’s economy has increased significantly in the last five years. Lyonchhoen, while presenting the State of the Nation Report in the Parliament yesterday, said from 5.7 percent GDP growth in 2008, the economic growth rate has increased to an average of about 8.8 percent.

The International Monetary Fund reveals the growth of Bhutanese economy as the fourth fastest in the world.

Presenting the State of the Nation Report, Lyonchhoen said one of the pledges of the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa was an economic growth rate of 9 percent. He said it was to achieve self-reliance through just and equitable growth.

The Prime Minister said the strong growth rate of the economy has boosted the expansion of the country’s economy by 70 percent of Nu.55 billion in 2008, to about Nu.95 billion in 2012. The GDP per capita income was increased by 59 percent. Lyonchhoen also said that this has helped the government in bringing down the poverty rate from 23.2 percent to 12 percent within five years. The rural poverty rate was also considerably reduced from about 31 percent in 2007 to 17 percent in 2012, the Report states.

Lyonchhoen emphasised that the country’s tremendous economic prosperity has not been at the expense of the country’s environment. He pointed out that the forest cover was expanded from 72.5 percent to 81 percent, and protected areas to 51 percent.

150 of 153 DPT pledges realised

The DPT government says only three pledges made in their manifesto have not been fulfilled. Of the 153 pledges Druk Phuensum Tshogpa made during the 2008 elections, 135 have been successfully implemented, according to the State of the Nation Report. Fifteen pledges remain partially fulfilled.

Helicopter services for official, business, and emergency purposes; promoting Bhutan as a regional centre for medical tourism; and ensuring equal access to legal support are three pledges that the government have not been able to fulfill.

The government says applications for helicopter services from the private sector were dropped due to commercial impracticality, high costs, and safety concerns. The second pledge to promote Bhutan as a regional centre for medical tourism did not happen as the study undertaken for the establishment indicated that the project was not feasible.

Apart from these three pledges, 15 have been partially fulfilled. They are the establishment of a dry port in Phuentsholing, the construction of an international convention centre, and promoting Bhutan as a viable hub for international banking and financial services, among others.

The government says they have continued to accord high priority to education and has achieved 99.6 percent universal primary enrolment, with most Dzongkhags achieving full enrolment.

Over 75,000 people in Nepalese camps resettled

The State of the Nation Report says more than 75,000 people living in the camps in Nepal have been resettled in third countries.

Sixty three thousand five hundred and forty three (63,543) people have been resettled in the United States, 5,296 in Canada, 3,839 in Australia, 774 in Denmark, 710 in New Zealand, 546 in Norway, 326 in the Netherlands, and 257 in the UK.

The Prime Minister said the core group of countries led by the US is resettling the people in the camps, and the government is deeply grateful for this.

Lyonchhoen added that those who have been resettled in these countries sent heart-warming reports of having found a new and dignified life of hope and confidence.

    A self-sufficient Bhutan by 2020

After the completion of the hydro-power projects, and once power generation reaches 10,000 megawatts by 2020, the per-capita income will be in between US$ 5700 to US$ 7000 according to the State of the Nation Report.

When the 10,000 megawatt power generation is realised, it is projected that the country’s GDP at current prices, will have grown to Nu.227 billion, an increase of about 140 percent.

The hydro-power sector which is highly prioritised to make the country self-sufficient, is the highest generator of revenue and employment in the country. A total of over 3,000 Bhutanese are currently employed in the three projects of Punatsangchhu I and II, and Mangdechhu. When these projects are commissioned in 2016 and 2017, it is projected that an additional annual revenue of about Rs.20 billion will flow into the Bhutanese economy.

Meanwhile, the pre-construction works of seven other hydro-power projects start this year. The projects are expected to be complete between 2019 and 2021.

Drukair: Important source of foreign exchange

The annual earning of Drukair Corporation in 2008 was US$ 18 million. It increased to US$ 31.2 million, last year. Lyonchhoen said the earnings have contributed, significantly, to the country’s foreign currency reserves.

At present, Drukair operates international flights to 10 destinations: Singapore, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bodh Gaya, Bagdogra, Kathmandu, Guwahati, Bangladesh and Thailand.

The domestic airports in Bumthang, Trashigang and Gelephu are all operational as well.

Number of tourists exceed government target in 2012

More than 1,05,000 tourists visited Bhutan, last year. Then State of the Nation Report shows the figure exceeded the government’s target of 1,00,000 tourists by 2012. The tourism sector is said to have generated US$ 227 million, last year.

The Prime Minister shared with parliamentarians that the amount earned from tourism is more than what the government had aimed for. Today, tourism represents more than 6 percent of the country’s GDP, and provides employment to more than 25,000 people.

Lyonchhoen shared that the government has revised the tourism policy and regulations for tour operations, accommodation, and tour guides to facilitate the growth of tourism in the country.

The development of the cultural industry, and the revival of folk and religious festivals through tourism activities are also the initiatives of the government.

The Report states that Merak and Sakteng Gewogs in Trashigang, and the Royal Manas National park in the south of the country have been promoted as tourist destinations for a balanced development of tourism in the country.

    • JYT’s growth rate was much higher. He is linked every where indirectly or directly. I mean corruption.

  5. Yeah, I could smell rat from the beginning. This website is all about fueling hatred towards JYT and DPT alone. Thanks Wakawaka for bringing those slim shady characters out in the dark.

  6. that is greatt.. we love country and people

    • Are the people like Lamzang and Jurme really Bhutanese by blood? Why are they trying to ruin our democracy at the cost of their personal prejudice? Bhutanese proverb says “a desperate man digs up a mountain”. Their newspapers failed because of biased and baseless reports. Now, they use this website to ruin the image of our country. They will live in desperation and die in desperation.

      • mr. paleden drukpa,i have 1 free advice 2 u.plss change ur name as dat u dont deserved that name.who cares whether those people are bhutanese by blood or not.they jst expressed there freedom of speech and opinion guaranteed to us by our constitution.if you n the government really thinks that is defamatory and than why you are not filling a defamatory case against them in a court of law.

  7. Get No Happiness (GNH) says:

Wakala, u seems like u r a good day to die hard fan of jyt, how much u r paid to support, unless u too ve share in edu city project or mckinsey. U seems u r oxford prof of eng, y dont u write poems n win noble prize. R u minister of ministry of english.

  8. Pemayanz says:

All these comments in favour of DPT is coming from the same person. You need to better job with your language if you post several comments

  9. The report should be called height of jyt’s bull crap because as usual, he has claimed credit for everything which can be presented as progress, which has been exaggerated and dismissed problems and failures as irrelevant.

Just to cite a few examples:

As the world champion of gnh the would-be assailant of gdp, one would have expected him to steer clear of citing growth as achievement. Moreover, isn’t he the one who said that such figures are grossly unreliable and misleading counting the wrong things and ignoring the important ones? But we forget no rules, even the ones made by himself, apply to him and his party. So all the boasts and lies of saying how much the Bhutanese economy has grown needs to be taken as his desperate attempt to spin his usual magic yarn and pull the wool over people’s eyes just before the government heads to the polls.
But the common person knows how the rupee shortage has made life so much more difficult in the last couple of years. The price of basic foodstuffs has doubled, in some cases even trebled. Our leaders wouldn’t know that because most of them are busy wining and dining on government expense – either on chef Kesang’s delicacies or in the posh restaurants of the capital. That is, when they are not traveling first class abroad and dining and wining in five star comfort on donor-funded dsa.
And how sure is he that the hydro power projects are going to be the goose that continues to lay the golden egg when it’s plain for every one to see that the rivers are drying up year after year and there’s not enough water to run the generators to a fraction of their capacity during winters even now? Of course his chamchas will probably say that by then he would have saved the world by forcing the US, China, Europe, and the rest to abandon gdp and adopt gnh, right? Of course!

    • actually GNH includes economic development as a pillar, so being a champion of Gnh does not mean you have to “steer clear of citing growth as achievement”.
saying jyt’s statments about the economy are “boasts and lies” does not make it so, on what basis are you saying these figures are lies?
in fact it is a lie to say that our leaders don’t know the troubles the rupee shortage has caused, obviously they do, they have taken measures to deal with it. If you don’t like the measures state why.

      • It’s not about liking PM or government or accusing of wrong figure. It’s about us the people. If GDP is improved that much, like Namgay Zam on BBS said, we have to experience it but the fact is we are experiencing the opposite.
The ones above director level won’t experience it cos they are paid for everything as allowances. house, car, fuel, driver, driver’s allowance and again mileage, cite few of many they are getting. It’s middle class civil servants paying for everything. Just for 15000 salary, which major chunk will be gone as house rent and rest paying car loan, fuel, accelerated grocery price, and we have to live on negative bank bal from start of month. Yet they never worry about us cos we 18000 numbers won’t make much difference to their vote but they always talk about local leader cos local leaders are more handy when comes to election. They can easily influence the local innocent people having direct dealing everyday.
Local leaders live in their own village, own house, most of the time missing from office to do their own work yet earning more than fulltime working civil servants. They are spoiled by the politicians- one of the examples is- PM ordering Geog Adms to work under/for Gups. Politicains always think about pleasing local leaders.
Government also said that they did solve housing problem in Thimphu, but where is the basis? If it’s done, we should be paying lesser house rents but House rents get increased every now n then with the whim of the owners. This shouldn’t be the way gov look at solving housing problem. Could do lot better. there are lots of government quarter in heart of Thimphu where house is one stored and big empty surroundings used as vegetable garden, these can be used for building bigger houses and can accommodate lot more. Civil servants are just handful If we get government house, the rent will be automatically better for other private workers as well. But then it’s not that government is not aware of; they are the house owners and just ignoring the problem to fetch them enough money.

  10. Chamchas of jyt and dpt think that he is equal, if not more than our Kings and therefore, dpt is like the institution of the monarchy. Why else would they think that criticizing him and his party is being anti-national or unpatriotic?
But then that is ingrained in the chamchas because their King has decreed so. After all, it was he who didn’t want to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict on the taxation case. The ACC is being portrayed as being manipulated by anti-dpt elements because it put dpt’s home minister and the speaker on the docks. He questioned the opposition leader’s loyalty to the country just because he asked some very valid questions on dpt’s foreign policy. And the government denied advertising money to a newspaper because it dared to be critical of the pm and the party…in other words, any institution, even constitutional oversight ones, are influenced by anti-dpt elements if they do their jobs and all individuals who dare to question or criticise jyt are definitely ngolops. This is their conviction. This is their creed. Save the people and the country from such monsters ya.

  11. What can we expect from Tibetan whose frustrations because of their failure is now discontented with our independence since the time he and his parents were given CID Card. He is out there to destroy anything he doesn’t like. This is Tenzin Lamsang.

What can we say about arse-sucker of LSN who is very unsure of his own talent. This OL.

what can we say about druggist- gangster who loves beating up people. Who writes shit on behest of foreigner wife. She writes most of the time and he gives his name on write-up…This is Jurmi Chowwang.

  12. t tangbi says:

GIMMICK by the Bhutanomics team…wonder who they are trying to fool. Satirical, perhaps. Childish, definitely. Totally disheartened by what people would do behind the veils of anonymity. Sad sad days in Bhutan.

  13. defox, you need not be so rude to the real hot blooded patriots. in my view u and your likes are the ones who are leading our country to dungeon. This is the view of YOUNG GENERATION BHUTANESE.
OR will you old guys intend to evict tibetan origin people from bhutan like it was done to southern bhutanese decades back? Your tone on CID issuance to TL and his parents hints this. Your hatred to bhutanese having foreign spouse and the people suffering with drug problems is sheer non sense and illogical.

  14. Thanks wakawaka for finally bringing this issue to this forum, i too say that they are the chamcha of OL and PDP i hate them

    • I too found this site quite biased and simply designed to attack the rulling party. This is wrong and Ii urge bhutanomics to be mindful of their actions or intentions as it seems to me that they are unnecessarily burning their image in the mud of baseless criticism ….a good journalist is when he earns respect by virtue of his unbiased approach or action. I do admire some of your brave media exposures about some of the greedy social elements who robes his or her own fellow citizens.

Awareness is the substrate of all experiences, if you want to affect a change, you must first and fully aware of it, not simply based on perception. we cannot change something that we are not fully aware of. However, things that you are not aware of can or do change you, that can be a problem. Awareness is also a value neutral…..or juncture between the extremes of the ruling and apposition……..

  15. any one who feels bias now?
I would like to thank Mr. Tenzin Lhamzang..And i hope we continues doing that. We need more Tenzin Lhamzang in bhutan.

  16. OniMaru says:

JYT and PDP .. both suck ass.
BUT what to do, we the people of Bhutan just have these two to choose from.
I’m just glad that JYT has been fully revealed to the public for the Megalomaniac he is.
As for PDP, that shit boat got torpedoed a long time ago.

  17. The other name of Democracy is Demon-Crazy. Don’t buy cloths from the “Sale Sale” counters. They are free and good for nothing.Go by brands to buy ethics, dignity, morale, loyality and equity in one pacakage.
